Mononucleosis and its Treatments

January 1, 2010

An enlarged spleen occurs in about half of all mono patients. In about one or two of every thousand mono cases, the spleen will rupture causing internal bleeding and a dangerous drop in blood pressure. A ruptured spleen is a medical emergency that requires hospitalization and a possible blood transfusion. Some people use panadol to reduce pain and fever however aspirin should be avoided as it has been associated with Reye’s syndrome – a potentially fatal disorder that causes brain and liver inflammation.

For the acute, initial stage of mono when symptoms like a sore throat, swollen glands, fever and fatigue prevail, the herb of choice is Olive leaf extract. This herb can penetrate infected cells and stop viruses from replicating. It also stimulates phagocytosis, the process by which white blood cells ingest harmful microorganisms and foreign matter. The cheapest and most accessible of the herbal remedies for mononucleosis is garlic. Garlic is a renowned cure-all for infections, and is readily available world-wide. Garlic can be eaten raw or added to soups, stir frys, teas, juices or salads. In the acute stage of mono, I recommend my patients use one clove a day.

So what are the symptoms of exhausted adrenals? Well the primary symptom is low energy, lethargy and ongoing fatigue. You may also notice dark circles under your eyes, lowered immunity, a poor sex drive, premenstrual tension, sugar cravings, headaches, poor concentration, unrefreshing sleep and a general loss of interest in life.
Chronic mononucleosis symptoms typically include fatigue, weakness, sore throat and swollen lymph glands. These symptoms can fluctuate from day to day, and week to week. Periods of feeling well are often followed by a relapse, as people try to resume normal activities or exercise.

Infectious Mononucleosis is usually a self-limiting, although sometimes prolonged, and often uncomfortable, illness. The potential complications make it essential that people with this illness be under the care of a physician. The herpes zoster virus is the cause of shingles, which occurs when the immune system is weakened and the dormant virus is activated. Symptoms include acute skin sensitivity and a classic rash running around one half of the midriff. The face, neck, and (rarely) eyes may also be affected.

One of the names coined for mono is ‘the kissing disease’. As a result, young adults are often teased about catching it! THe reason it is sometimes called the kissing disease, is that Epstein Barr virus is transmitted through the saliva exchange that occurs when you kiss someone. Kissing is not the only way to pick up the virus, actually it is quite easy to get from contact with things you come across in everyday life. For example, sharing drinks or food, touching an infected item or even a simple handshake with someone who is already infected.

Essentially the answer to that is – ANYONE! Mononucleosis, caused by the Epstein Barr Virus, is very common. Interestingly, many people aged above 30 will already have antibodies in their system against the Epstein Barr virus. Studies have shown that only 5% of people aged between 35 and 40 will NOT have been exposed to the virus and will therefore be vulnerable.

Rarely, the liver and spleen are enlarged; and some affected people may also develop a rash on the body.As bad as things get with chronic mononucleosis, we can hopefully find more comfort and joy in the simple little things in life. For some people with chronic mononucleosis who are bedridden, simple pleasures may be listening to music, audio stories, meditation tapes or hearing the birds singing outside.

There are also specific herbal remedies for mononucleosis to help relieve the mono symptoms. For example, to help ease the discomfort of a high fever, the herbs coriander seed and cleavers can be made into a tea.Herbal remedies for mononucleosis should be one of the first treatments you try when recovering from this debilitating illness. Results are usually fast and effective, and come with none of the side effects that conventional medications have.

Menstrual Cycle and its Symptoms

January 1, 2010

Menstrual cycle also known as monthly cycle is a monthly process in which the female reproductive organs get ready for the possibility of pregnancy. The main events in the endometrium and monthly cycle are ovulation, the thickening of the endometrium and menstruation. The length of the monthly cycle can be anything from 20 to 36 days. But the average menstrual cycle is about 28 days long. Over 70% of all women menstruate approximately every 28 days. Remaining women experience considerable variations from the average.

Seriously don’t bother buying the latest celebrity workout DVD. What benefit will you get from watching a well toned, attractive lady telling you how to get into shape? The chances are that she didn’t get fit by herself but instead was in a position to hire a full time trainer to keep her motivated and also didn’t use the exercises she shows you in the DVD. Very soon you will realise that the chances of actually getting the body and looks of a celebrity are slim and can quickly sap your motivation and make you self conscious. So you would be better spending the money on a session at the gym with a trainer who will work out a plan for you to follow and you will see better results too.

Although every woman’s body responds uniquely to the hormonal changes brought on by nursing their babies, there are certain constants that are associated with the monthly menstrual cycle and breastfeeding. Many women will experience irregular periods while nursing, while others will not menstruate at all until they stop breastfeeding their babies altogether.

As a general rule, breastfeeding causes a delay in the return of menstruation following pregnancy for most women. Also, the frequency of breastfeeding plays a large role as to how soon the menstrual cycle is regulated and once again normal. Women who nurse their babies exclusively may not have a period for as long as a year or more after their pregnancies and will soon discover that the menstrual cycle and breastfeeding seem to be directly related to one another.

Usually it can take anything from four to six weeks for a woman’s reproductive organs to heal and get back to normal. Your monthly cycle could start earlier than the first four weeks after the surgery or like most women it may take a longer than the six weeks. In fact, after tubal reversal surgery you could easily be a few days, if not more, late for your menstrual cycle.

Your first menstrual cycle after the tubal reversal surgery could be accompanied with pain as well as being a rather heavy flow. This is quite normal and all part of the process. Very often, you will find that your usual over the counter pain remedy will not ease the pain at all. You may be able to find a different over the counter pain medication that works so try a few out. If you find that none of these are useful at killing the pain, be sensible and do not take more than they advise. Go and see your doctor, tell him about your problems and hopefully he will be able to prescribe some medication that will work.

Most theorists, scientist, and researchers believe that the primary purpose of the menstrual cycle is to create and prepare a woman’s body for pregnancy. Due to groundbreaking new studies on the impact of hormonal changes on a the female brain and how this affects her behavior, I believe that the menstrual cycle is nature’s alarm system that provides women with the emotional, psychological, and cognitive adaptive skills and clues that allow them to function and survive in a male dominated society. A woman’s menstrual cycle is nature’s psychological and biological navigational map that is designed to guide and instruct her on how to improve her life and maximize her full potential.

Symptoms

Menstruation is blood vessels in the endometrium that peel and come out. Estrogen and Luteinizing hormone (LH) are sex hormones that cause ovulation and menstruation in ladies. One cycle of menstruation is 28 days and the menstrual period take about 3-7 days. The color of the period may red or dark red. Many bodies have misunderstanding about the color of the blood that comes out during menstruation. Dark color of it is not inoperative or bad blood. But truly, it causes from the blood that stuck in ovary for long time reacts with oxygen in the air and make the color darker.

Symptoms are both physical and emotional. Your time of month may range from warning sign free to uncontrollable emotions and pains. You may feel the same symptoms every month, or new ones can occur month after month.

Physical symptoms may include headache, fluid retention, constipation, abdominal cramping, joint pain, and slight weight gain. When we women say, “I feel like I am going crazy” this is true. When PMS strikes and your hormones change you have emotional attacks. These attacks can include anxiety, depression, irritability, lack of coordination, and even poor work ethic.

Perimenopause and menopause will affect each woman differently. Your only one of the perimenopause symptoms may be that your period stops. However, you may have one or more of the other symptoms of perimenopause. Perimenopause symptoms can be experienced by a woman for a few months or they can last for years. Since the average age of menopause is 51, symptoms of perimenopause can appear in a woman’s late 30′s, any time in her 40′s or early 50′s.During perimenopause, many women begin experiencing their first symptoms of hormone imbalance. How does hormone imbalance happen?

Sleep Apnea,Symptoms and Treatments

December 31, 2009

Central sleep apnea cures are very different, as is the cause of this disorder. When a person suffers from this form, the basic neurological controls that regulate breathing malfunction. When this happens breathing cycles are interrupted and the body literally ‘forgets’ to exhale. Some individuals may suffer from both conditions, although this is not common. The most suitable sleep apnea cures for any individual will, of course, depend upon which form of the condition they have.

A common treatment for sleep apnea is a device called a c-pap machine, which uses a small mask that is worn on the face covering the nose (and sometimes the mouth as well) to deliver a continuous blast of air down the throat all night, keeping it open. While looking for a long term cure, this machine can offer considerable relief and protection, reducing the risk of damage to the heart and brain.

It turns out that this company’s been busy developing this product and is about to undergo clinical trials in Europe before trying it out here the US. The technology’s not new-it’s basically a nerve stimulation device that activates that’s been used on other areas of the body before. In this case, activation of the rib cage muscles causes the device to stimulate the hypoglossal nerve, which tenses the genioglossus muscle of the tongue.

During non-REM deep sleep, all the muscles in the body relax partially, whereas in REM sleep, all the muscles are relaxed completely. In sleep apnea patients, this partial and total muscle relaxation leads to repeated obstructions and arousals. By sensing that lungs are inflating, it stimulates the tongue muscle, preventing eventual collapse of the throat tissues.

Integrated humidifier: Integrated humidifiers are designed to work as components of CPAP machines, which means patients only need a single hose and power cord, for added portability. Since these humidifiers are constructed for specific machines, patients need to replace them every time they switch machines. Also, some types of integrated humidifiers function as passover humidifiers, which restricts the amount of moisture created.

Symptoms

Built in humidifier: Built in humidifiers are permanent components of CPAP machines, creating a very compact setup. These can function as either heated or passover humidifiers. Patients who travel often may not enjoy built in humidifiers since they cannot be removed from CPAP machines, making the overall machine heavier than a machine without a humidifier. Also, since the CPAP and humidifier are a single unit, if there is a problem with any component, the entire machine will have to be repaired.

There are a number of symptoms that signal this sleeping disorder but as this disorder takes place when one is sleeping these symptoms can be hard to point out. Some of the common symptoms of sleep apnea include:

• Morning headaches
• Mood swings, irritability and sometimes depression
• Trouble in concentrating or remembering things
• A need to urinate in the night
• Waking up feeling very thirsty
• Tendency to gasp for breath and wake up in the middle of the night

All or some of these symptoms are accompanied with loud snoring, which tends to get worse if the person suffering from this disorder sleeps on his/her back.

Most sufferers of sleep apnea experience either obstructive sleep apnea, which is a physical blockage of the airway by tissue in the throat, or central sleep apnea, which is the failure of the brain to control even breathing, resulting in cycles of apneas and hyperpneas. When a patient suffers from both central and obstructive sleep apnea and exhibits symptoms of both, the patient is said to suffer from mixed sleep apnea. Mixed sleep apnea is a tricky form of sleep apnea that is quite difficult to amend with established forms of treatment.

Treatments

Passover humidifiers typically work best with low pressure CPAP machines and are often prescribed to new sleep apnea patients. These humidifiers can work wonders for some patients, but for others they are simply not enough. In passover humidifiers, there is no way to customize the amount of moisture received, and they produce less moisture when operating at colder temperatures. Patients can turn their heated humidifiers into passive humidifiers by turning off the heat.

There are herbal medicines that could be considered natural cures. It would be best to consult a homeopathic physician before trying them, as there are different types of treatment available. Sambucus, for example, is a supplement often recommended to individuals who find breathing difficult at night, a good supplement for those who have obstructive sleep apnea or suffer from asthma.

Mostly people suffer from the obstructive form of this sleep problem. Disruption in breathing in this form of apnea is caused by blockage in the airflow in spite of the respiratory effort. But in the central form of sleep apnea, reduced effort from the respiratory system causes interruptions in breathing. The transition from central to obstructive features is the reason behind the breathing disturbance in complex problem. Sleep apnea cures will help you diagnosed by this sleep disorder.

Neck Problems and Injuries

December 31, 2009

Almost all of us have felt the excruciating sensation brought about by neck pain. There are many causes of pain in the neck. Common causes are physical and emotional stress, prolonged postures, minor injuries and falls, upper back problems, and over strain of the neck muscles. Nerd fact, neck pain is also called cervicalgia. This occurs mainly because there is pressure or tension on the muscles of the neck and the upper back. The tension tightens the muscles around the neck producing pain. One way of reducing this pain is to use a neck pain pillow.

Before I dealt in further about the pillow, let me tell you about necks. The neck is the second most important part of your body, because as you can see, it holds the most important part of your body – your head (not your face). Improper support when resting will cause the head to tilt forward to your chest which increases stress and strain on your neck muscles. Long periods in this awkward position will lead to neck soreness and even stinging pain.

When you are suffering from neck or back pain, one of the options available to you is to visit a chiropractor. Chiropractors advertise their services as being beneficial for spinal health and back and neck problems, which in turn benefits the general health of the individual. While some individuals have reported great success with visiting chiropractors, there is also evidence that suggests that chiropractic treatment may be harmful.

If you have visited a chiropractor for treatment and feel that you suffered further injuries or health complications afterward, you may be a victim of medical malpractice. A personal injury lawyer with expertise in medical malpractice can help you prepare your personal injury case for court and will fight to get you the compensation you deserve.

1) Improve your posture. Poor posture implies muscles working out of balance. This causes upper-body tension and cervical pain. But it is easy to strengthen muscles and improve posture with guidance from a personal fitness trainer.

2) Stretch often during your day. It is especially important to stretch in rotating directions. Too often we are positioned in forward-flexed positions. Rotation allows our spine and spinal discs to breathe and refresh. Cervical discs will also feel improved oxygen and blood flow when the whole spine is loosened.

5) Receive massage therapy. Swedish massage relieves stress, which often contributes to neck and upper-body tension: carrying the “weight of the world” up there. If your stiff neck is related to previous injuries or poor posture, you might opt for Deep Tissue or more aggressive styles of massage.

6) See a licensed acupuncturist. Acupuncture has been used for neck problems for centuries. It is practiced all over the world. For best results, see a licensed acupuncturist, instead of a doctor or other practitioner who might only have taken a weekend course in acupuncture techniques.

7) Get regular aerobic exercise. Increasing blood and oxygen flow to the muscles helps refresh tense muscles and loosen restrictions. Your whole body will feel better.

Injuries

The belief that all whiplash injuries are short lived is a misconception. 45% of whiplash claimants report they still suffer with neck symptoms of the condition two years after the accident and many continue to do so long after their compensation claim has been settled.

Traditionally, insurance companies have maintained that only short term care is required and that there are no long term effects. But an Australian study in 2006 by the University of Queensland backed up earlier research published in the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology that those who had suffered a whiplash injury were more likely to suffer long term effects such as headaches, lack of mobility in the neck and shoulders, lower back pain and even psychological ailments such as depression. The original study concluded that individuals with pre-existing problems were more vulnerable to long term effects from traumatic injury including whiplash.

It has always seemed strange that people usually don’t look after themselves as well as they look after their cars. Slight neck pain, headaches and lower back pain are all too often minimized, overlooked, or brushed off as not something to worry about after an auto collision injury. This shouldn’t be the case. Can you imagine if other health concerns were treated so recklessly?

The injury triggers in whiplash related accidents are complicated. Discs can become herniated, fractures of the spine can occur, muscles stretch and tear and ligaments can often partially tear or even burst. There are numerous various symptoms that can cause pain in the neck or back, ranging in severity from an irritation that is small to a disability that is severe as a result of these injuries. Short-term back and neck pain is very distressing, but chronic back and neck problems are even more difficult to cope with.

Signs and Symptoms of Celiac Disease

December 25, 2009

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease caused due to allergy to gluten. It is also referred to as gluten sensitive enteropathy. The disorder usually occurs due to gluten present in cereals and other grains. It affects a lot of organs and therefore, has many associated symptoms. To address this disease is becoming much easier due to the fact that there are many gluten free foods available in the stores or specialty stores that offer substitutes for gluten products that everybody use. Today more and more people are diagnosed with celiac disease and more people need to be educated to this disease.

If you are suffering from this digestive disorder, it means you cannot tolerate or digest gluten. If you do eat food containing gluten, it will trigger your immune system, which, in turn, will attack the lining of the small intestine. This will seriously affect the absorption of proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, folic acid, iron and calcium. In turn, you will suffer from vitamin and mineral deficiency; and there will not be sufficient vitamins and minerals to nourish the central nervous system, liver, bones and other organs of the body.

However, if the ultrasound is negative or normal and gallbladder disease is still suspected a nuclear test called biliary scintography or more commonly called HIDA scan is ordered. The basis of this test is the fact that a radiolabeled chemical is administered intravenously that is concentrated in the liver where bile is made before being stored in the gallbladder between meals. If the gallbladder is diseased it may fail to be seen on the scan due to blockage or fail to empty as expected when a hormone called cholecystokinin (CCK) is given intravenously.

CCK is present in the body and released with meals to stimulate gallbladder emptying of bile into the intestine for digestion. Typically, the gallbladder will empty a third or more of its volume when CCK is given during a HIDA scan but usually not more than 70-80%. The fraction of volume the gallbladder empties is referred to as the ejection fraction. A low ejection fraction is typical of a diseased gallbladder. Reproduction of the typical pain of gallbladder disease and a low ejection fraction are considered diagnostic of gallbladder disease in the absence of gallstones and results in a recommendation that the gallbladder be removed surgically.

Dyspepsia is a medical term for stomach upset, indigestion or gas-bloat abdominal discomfort. This commonly occurs in celiac disease. Stomach contractions have been shown to be impaired in celiac disease contributing to the bloating sensation. This is confirmed by diagnostic studies revealing poor stomach emptying. Delayed stomach emptying is frequently accompanied by low pressures in the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) of the esophagus or swallowing tube. The LES is supposed to be a barrier to regurgitation of stomach contents up into the esophagus. When stomach juice that is acidic refluxes into the esophagus a burning pain is typically felt in the chest that is described by most people as heartburn.

It is surprising that most of the people who are familiar with the topics on Celiac diseases do not know that wheat allergy and gluten intolerance are entirely different. There are many websites that refer to these terms in totally wrong contexts. There are people who refer to these terms interchangeably. Hence, it is very vital for you to identify the differences between these two specific health conditions. Most of the people would have heard that wheat allergy is very similar to the common diseases such as hay fever or allergies that happen to pets. The allergy is stimulated when basophiles or some specific white blood cells and mast cells react to Immunoglobulin E or IgE for short. Generally, wheat allergy can be treated well with an antihistamine.

Symptoms

World wide it seems Celiac Disease is being under diagnosed. Despite its relative ease in diagnosis, involving blood tests and a gastro-scope biopsy, it is very commonly overlooked. Doctors often mistakenly believe that it is a rare disorder, even though current statistics show it at 1% of the population (this is for the US and UK; there seems to be little other data available elsewhere). This number is assumed to be even higher amongst the many undiagnosed patients. It can also be a hereditary disease and can run in families. It also is more common in people who already have other autoimmune diseases, such as Hypothyroidism, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Addison’s Disease and Type 1 Diabetes.

Gluten intolerance, whether through Celiac disease or non-Celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS), is an autoimmune disease which manifests its symptoms over time. Gluten intolerance is a systemic response to the proteins glutenin and gliadin within gluten. When unusually strong antibodies in your system react to these proteins, they attack the lining of your small intestine.

Over time, the villi along your small intestinal lining wear down and make your intestine less able to digest and absorb nutrients from your food. Despite what many people seem to think, this is not an instantaneous reaction. It can sometimes take years for symptoms to result from gluten intolerance (although most often it only takes months or even just weeks).

Treatments and Care of Hypertension

December 25, 2009

Pulmonary heart disease is a complication of either acute or chronic lung disease. Because it does not develop until the lung disease is at an advanced stage, pulmonary heart disease is difficult to diagnose in an early stage. When an individual’s lungs are damaged from infection, smoking, or inhaling toxins, or if they develop an embolus, the blood pressure in the arteries leading from the heart to the lungs can increase and force the heart to work harder to get the blood into the lungs to be oxygenated.

Eventually the heart cannot get an adequate supply of blood into the lungs, so the rest of the body begins to suffer from a shortage of oxygen, ant patients experience vertigo, shortness of breath, and fatigue.Pulmonary hypertension leads to pulmonary heart disease when the right chambers of the heart, which are the ones closest the lungs, begin to fail from the effort of trying to force blood into the lungs and the lack of oxygen which is affecting the entire body.

The usual treatment for pulmonary heart disease is the same as that for congestive heart failure, in which calcium channel blockers are prescribed to dilate the pulmonary blood vessels and reduce the blood pressure in the lungs. But if the pulmonary heart disease has caused right heart failure, a heart/lung transplant is the only viable treatment.Because of the stress involved in performing a heart lung transplant, they are usually restricted to younger victims of pulmonary heart disease. Older will be treated with oxygen therapy, dietary changes, and the appropriate medications.

The importance of early diagnosis and controlling blood pressure is emphasized over and over again by health care authorities. However, it seems like still too many people with hypertension ignore the health complications caused by increased blood pressure. It looks like sometimes even the most trusted people such as doctors, make shortcuts in treating this life threaten medical condition. In one of my earlier articles I’ve already addressed this specific problem: not all doctors take you by the hand and “force” you to take care of high blood pressure, treat hypertension and this way avoid further deterioration in your health condition.

Unfortunately, sometimes doctors take dangerous shortcuts that boil down into additional health complications. To support my claim: there are cases when patients do file a lawsuit against the healthcare provider for improperly treated medical condition. (Although, it is rare but it does happens) When it comes to improper treatment of hypertension, the consequences could be experiencing renal (kidney) failure or even worse – stroke.Learning deep relaxation exercises, taking up a low stress hobby, getting in a little bit of low impact exercise, or even taking up yoga can greatly reduce the amount of stress and anxiety that you carry around with you. This in effect will also lower the amount of hypertension you experience. The point is to make a plan to incorporate a little relaxation into your life. You deserve it after all and it can save your life if you let it. It will also make you a little bit easier to live with.

One way, that is receiving more and more acclaim to treat hypertension and high blood pressure is with the use of hypnotherapy or NLP (neuro-linguistic programming). An NLP therapist with your best interest in mind will require that you receive a physicians care along with your hypnotherapy if you’ve been diagnosed as having high blood pressure. This will ensure that you are getting the best possible care and that you will truly be able to help control hypertension from the very beginning.

Neuro-linguistic treatment programs work to help control hypertension because they teach your mind to get the upper hand. When you put your mind in charge, as it should be, you will receive much better results for your efforts at lowering your blood pressure. This works because NLP can be used to program your body to be balanced in combination with hypnosis for hypertension that is mean to help you relax, lower your stress level, and get the sleep you need to succeed.

Fresh fruit and vegetables are an excellent source of necessary vitamins and nutrients that are critical in maintaining a proper sense of health. Lean meats and whole grains also work to create the ultimate diet. Many individuals simply do not know the correct manner of eating, so an appointment with a dietician is the best way to learn.

Care

When it comes to natural hypertension remedies, there are a lot of misconceptions and myths about possible treatments. If you are currently considered at risk for hypertension, then it is critical that you strive to learn everything possible about your optionsincluding those natural options that are often overlooked or dismissed. For this reason, consider speaking with your primary health care provider about a wide array of treatment programs. In many instances, individuals with hypertension also have increased chances of other serious conditions, including heart attacks or strokes. In order to preserve your current health status, it is imperative that you act immediately to correct your hypertension, and natural hypertension remedies may be the key.

Over the last few years, dozens of highly effective antihypertensive drugs have been developed that have truly revolutionized the treatment of this disease. At one time, the only treatments available for high blood pressure were surgery, which was not very effective, or an extreme restriction of salt intake, which in some cases meant living on a diet of mostly fruit and rice. Now most cases of hypertension can be brought under control with drugs, which may be prescribed singly or in combination.

If you are on a diuretic you may only have the annoying side effect of needing to urinate frequently. However, that diuretic is flushing out more than just salt. Potassium, calcium and manganese are also lost in this process. Deficiencies in these minerals can lead to gout, irregular heartbeat and hypoglycemia. And if you don’t do something about the way you live your life, you will probably graduate to one of the stronger blood pressure meds and those things can come with some really serious side effects.Beta blockers reduce the heartbeat in an attempt to lower pressure. If however, the heart is reduced to the point that it can not fully pump all the blood in the chamber, you risk congestive heart failure, heart attack or stroke.

Scleroderma,Causes and Treatments

December 23, 2009

Scleroderma frequently causes Reynaud’s phenomenon, a condition in which the tips of fingers, toes, nose, tongue and ears turn blue, white and then red after exposure to cold, heat or even with an emotional upset. Scleroderma also causes the capillaries of the face, lips, mouth and fingers to dilate, creating tiny, red, blanching spots called telangiectasias. Both these conditions can be treated using medicines like Tapyadi Loha, Manjishtha and Saariva. A highly elevated blood pressure is best treated with modern anti-hypertensive medications.

Inflammation of the lungs can be treated using medicines like Kantakari (Solanum surattense), Brihat Kantakari (Solanum indicum), Behada (Terminalia bellerica), Yashtimadhuk, Pippali, Pushkarmool (Inula racemosa) and Sitopaadi Churna. By affecting the large bowel, scleroderma can cause either severe constipation or diarrhea. These conditions can be treated using medicines like Triphala (Three fruits), Kutki, Psyllium (Plantago ovata), Musta and Kutaj.

How can any one treatment combat an ever increasing avalanche of symptoms? Perhaps modern medical practices are concentrating their efforts in the wrong place, maybe that’s why Scleroderma is considered an incurable disease, perhaps that’s why the only options ever available are those designed to treat the symptoms and not the disease.Recently I discovered that the answer to most forms of scleroderma, its many symptoms and its cause might indeed be treatable, I wont say there is a cure for the disease as lets face it that would be irresponsible however if control sounds acceptable you might just be interested in what I found. As with anything, it’s fair to say that nothing works for everyone and this is no exception to that rule, The procedure I’m going to explain to you is split into a few parts, but in essence it concentrates on tackling the underlying contributing elements which are known to be prevalent in most people who suffer with Scleroderma.

Collagen is a fibrous protein that occurrsn bone, cartilage and connective tissue. It is a major structural protein that forms molecular cables to strengthen the tendons and vast, resilient sheets that support the skin and internal organs. There is no organ or tissue which does not have collagen. Collagen acts as the important support structure in tissues around which cells live and function. Elements of our body such as bones and teeth are made by adding mineral crystals to collagen.

Causes

Scleroderma directly affects the skin, and in sometimes in more severe cases, it can affect the blood vessels and internal organs of the body. The most visible scleroderma symptom is the hardening of skin and associated scarring that goes along with it. This hardened skin will normally appear reddish or scaly in appearance. Often times this will allow blood vessels to be more visible.
The most serious aspect of the disease to take into account are: The total area that is covered, and the the level of internal involvement that is taking place. These are important to consider because a patient that only has minor coverage is much less likely to have damange to internal organs and tissues as someone with larger coverage.

Scleroderma affects approximately 300,000 people in the United States. Scleroderma affecting the esophagus leads to heartburn. This is directly a result of stomach acid backflowing up into the esophagus. Sometimes this can lead to scarring of the esophagus with difficulty swallowing and/or localized pain in the central chest. It is four times as common in women than in men. Incidence rates are estimated at 2-20 per million per year in the United States. Scleroderma affecting the large bowel (colon) most often causes constipation, but can also lead to cramping and diarrhea. When this is severe, it complete stool blockage (fecal impaction) can result. Inflammation of the lungs in scleroderma can cause scarring, resulting in shortness of breath, especially with physical exertion. Elevated pressure in the arteries to the lungs (pulmonary hypertension) can also cause shortness of breath and difficulty getting an adequate breath with activity. Elevated blood pressure is potentially serious and can lead to kidney damage. Symptoms include headache, fatigue, and in severe cases, stroke.

Rheumatism is a word used to describe a number of diseases, acute or chronic, which are accompanied by pain and stiffness of the muscles, the joints and other tissues involved in movement. Arthritis is the term used to describe inflammation of the joints only. The joint includes the ends of bones, cartilages between the ends, a capsule holding it all together, ligaments which attach the muscles to the bones, membranes and the joint fluid. Nerves accompany the blood vessels into the joints; while the bones and cartilage do not feel pain, inflammation and swelling with the pouring of extra fluid into the joint can produce exquisite pain.

Treatments

Esophageal contractions are very important, they are caused by the act of swallowing. During this, food, saliva or whatever there is in the esophagus is pushed into the stomach, and if there is a abnormality with this contraction, refluxed acid is not pushed back into the stomach.
Some abnormalies that can appear: the waves of contraction may die out before they reach the stomach, or waves of contraction do not begin after each swallow, or the pressure generated by the contractions is too slow to push the acid back into the stomach.
These are frequent in patients that have gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Rheumatoid arthritis is not just a disease of the joints, but a general condition affecting the whole body. While the exact cause or causes may not be known, the discovery of the effects of ACTH and Cortisone have led to new concepts of the nature of the disease. Now rheumatoid arthritis along with a number of other conditions is called a “collagen” disease. In all of these the connective tissue of the body is chiefly concerned. The tendency is to consider rheumatoid arthritis a reaction of the body to sensitivity to certain substances, perhaps coming from bacteria, with the sensitivity affecting the connective tissue chiefly. The suggestion has also been made that rheumatism is not a specific reaction to some single substance but a general reaction of the body resulting from several different stimulations.

Scabies,Causes and Treatments

December 23, 2009

Scabies is a very contagious skin condition that occurs due to infestation with parasitic mites. The mite responsible for causing scabies in people is a microscopic organism called Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis. Although there are many other types of mites that cause scabies in animals, they are not capable of infesting humans.Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis can be acquired either directly, by entering in contact with infested persons, or indirectly, by entering in contact with contaminated objects. Once they find a human host, scabies mites climb onto the skin and hide in less exposed regions of the body. Scabies mites commonly infest the toes, feet, ankles, knees, the genitals, the buttocks, the upper back, elbows and wrists. Rarely, scabies mites can even infest the scalp and face.

Unless the doctor recommend otherwise, permethrin should only be applied twice, with local applications 5-7 days apart. As in the case of similar scabies medications, the application of permethrin shouldn’t be washed off the skin for 12 hours. After this period of time, permethrin should be removed from the surface of the skin using warm water and non-irritant soap. The treatment is best to be applied not only on the skin with affection, but on the entire body skin (the areas between the fingers and toes, the regions of the feet, ankles, knees, elbows, wrists, lower abdomen, genitals, buttocks, armpits, and nipples). In the case of very young patients (infants and babies), elderly patients and patients with immune system deficiencies, the application of permethrin should include the regions of the neck, face, ears and scalp.

While the first symptoms of scabies may occur within a week after acquiring the parasitic mites, the first clear signs of infestation can be spotted only after a few weeks. In the incipient stages of infestation, scabies generates symptoms such as persistent itching, skin inflammation and rash. Later symptoms include the presence of burrows in the superficial layers of the skin, blisters, pustules and even nodules. It is very important to avoid scratching, as it can lead to serious skin infections.Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis is the species of itch mite that can infest a human. The adult female mite will burrow into the upper layer of skin and deposit eggs. The resulting infestation can become very itchy and present with a ” scabies rash ” Symptoms may not appear until 2-6 weeks after initial exposure but more quickly if the person has been infested before. An infested person can transmit scabies even if they show no symptoms.

Causes

* Itching skin, which may become more intense at night

* Small burrows under the skin surface

* Inability to sleep due to relentless itching

* Redness or irritation of the skin in certain areas

The redness and irritation from Scabies is most common in the areas between the fingers, on the wrists, knees, elbows, shoulders, breasts, and genitals. In children, Scabies is commonly contracted in schools or daycare centers, while elderly people often contract it in retirement homes.

There are many medications available for the treatment of Scabies, from doctor prescribed pharmaceuticals to over the counter creams. And often, they only treat the symptoms and not the root cause. However, the safety of many of these medications is questionable. In most cases, scabies rash shares many similarities with the clinical manifestations of many different skin disorders, including eczema, dermatitis and chicken pox. In the absence of more relevant signs of mite infestation, scabies rash can point to other conditions rather than scabies, preventing doctors from deciding upon the accurate diagnosis and prescribing the right treatment.

Treatments

The unspecific character of the rash produced by scabies mites is the main reason for delayed medical intervention. In some cases, persons with scabies may have already developed complications (bacterial infections, scaling and crusting of the skin) by the time they are diagnosed with scabies and are prescribed the appropriate medications.Once infested, scabies is treatable with prescription lotions and creams called scabicides. Not only should the infested person be properly treated, but, according to the CDC ” bedding, clothing, and towels used by infested persons or their household, sexual, and close contacts anytime during the three days before treatment should be decontaminated by washing in hot water and drying in a hot dryer, by dry-cleaning, or by sealing in a plastic bag for at least 72 hours. Scabies mites generally do not survive more than 2 to 3 days away from human skin.”

The treatment prescribed by the doctor will consist of a lotion called Elimite that contains permethrin and is safe to use on children too. This lotion must be applied on the body from neck to toes before bedtime and washed off in the morning. The treatment must be repeated. It is not recommended to use a lotion based on lindane because of its high toxicity rate especially in children. In pregnant women only permethrin is safe to use.Scabies is transmittable to family members, roommates, sexual partners and to those who live in crowded places. Check-ups are necessary for all these people to see if they got infected or not.
Because of the intense itching, the skin can get infected and antibiotic drug treatment should be followed. The doctor should be called if you suspect scabies has infected you because home remedies can not cure this disease. The symptoms for scabies are intense itching especially at night and red marks and blisters over the fingers, the elbows, the wrists and all around the waist.

Malaria and its Treatments

December 22, 2009

In the midst and allure of this beautiful world we live in, it is important to understand that we are not alone. The world is inhabited by other creatures – animals, bacteria, viruses, microbes and several other kinds of life forms. Some of these we can see and recognize but many others are clearly not visible with the naked eye.
Malaria is always a serious disease and may be a deadly illness. If you become ill with a fever or flu-like illness either while traveling in a malaria-risk area or after you return home (for up to 1 year), you should seek immediate medical attention and should tell the physician your travel history.

Worldwide, malaria affects between 300 and 500 million people each year. Malaria is a leading cause of death and disease worldwide, especially in developing countries. Other species of plasmodia infect reptiles, birds and other mammals.

Malaria has an incubation of 10-21 days but may be longer. In humans, the malarial parasites (called sporozoites) after being released into the bloodstream from a mosquito bite, migrate to the liver where they mature and release another form, the malarial merozoites.

Malaria is a serious disease caused by a parasite. Infected mosquitoes spread it. Malaria is very common throughout the world. In the United States, the main risk is to persons traveling to tropical and subtropical countries where malaria is a problemMalaria symptoms will occur at least 7 to 9 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Fever in the first week of travel in a malaria-risk area is unlikely to be malaria; however, any fever should be promptly evaluated.

Plasmodium falciparum, so called ‘malignant tertian fever’, or ‘black water fever,’ is the most common strain of malaria and is also the deadliest. This strain of malaria is a serious disease that is responsible for about 2-million deaths per year, predominantly in young children in sub Saharan Africa.

Treatments

Corticoid steroids are often prescribed in the treatment of lupus. Corticosteroided hormones such as prednisone, hydrocortisone, methylprednisolone and dexamethasone are usually prescribed in small doses to reduce inflammation. Due to the fact that these medications can produce serious side-effects, they are only prescribed in short-term treatments. For patients confronted with severe forms of lupus, doctors usually prescribe immunosuppressive drugs such as azathioprine and cyclophosphamide.

Although at present there is no specific cure for lupus, the existing treatments can greatly ameliorate the symptoms of the disease and minimize the risk of complications. Lupus often has an unpredictable pattern of progression, producing symptoms that come and go over time. Thus, most lupus treatments are aimed at prolonging the periods of remission and ameliorating the phases of relapse.

The tests are funded by the National Institutes of Health. The successes so far are showing some promising results, but nothing can be used as of yet to benefit mankind. The research has expected to one day block the illness, but for now we can only wait and hope.Mosquitoes travel considerable distances, sometimes mare than a mile when the wind is favorable. This fact makes their destruction and the prevention of their breeding the responsibility of the whale community and not just that of a single household.

Malaria is a serious disease caused by a parasite. Infected mosquitoes spread it. Malaria is very common throughout the world. In the United States, the main risk is to persons traveling to tropical and subtropical countries where malaria is a problem. There are four different types of malaria caused by four related parasites. The most deadly type occurs in Africa south of the Sahara Desert. The symptoms characteristic of malaria include fever, chills, muscle aches, and headache. Cycles of chills, fever, and sweating that recur every 1, 2 or 3 days are typical. There can sometimes be vomiting, diarrhoea, coughing and yellowing (jaundice) of the skin and whites of the eyes. The treatment for malaria depends upon the geographic area where a person has been infected with the disease. Different areas of the world have malaria types that are resistant to certain medications.

Dental Care and its Treatments

December 22, 2009

Bleeding gums is common for the millions of Americans who are experiencing gum problems. Amongst these gum problems are gingivitis and periodontal disease. Most of the time, it is the result of the improper removal of plaques in the gum line. There are some other serious medical conditions associated with the gums bleeding such as diabetes, leukemia, platelet disorders, heart disease and pancreatic cancer. There is a need to undergo checkup at first sign of bleeding gums so dentists may be able to know what is causing it. If the result isn’t as severe, the patient may undergo minor treatments such as dental cleaning. If the doctor was able to determine that it is something related to a more serious case, preventive measures are done.

There are signs which indicate a person is having a periodontal disease. Amongst these are: having a bad breath or bad taste which are hard to get rid of, swollen and bleeding gums, difficulty in chewing, sensitive teeth, gums which are unusually unattached to the wall of the teeth, unstable fitting of the teeth whenever biting and unstable fitting of partial dentures. Smoking, diabetes, poor oral hygiene and stress are amongst the reason of the increased risk of periodontal disease. There are prevention and treatment for people going through this disease. They are advised to at least visit their dentists at least once or twice a year for dental cleaning. Daily oral hygiene is also advised. Whenever a person brushes or flosses, it decreases the possibility of bacteria build up in the mouth.

Keeping a clean mouth and clean teeth is healthy and allows for easier eating. It can also increase confidence when smiling, laughing, and talking. Taking care of one’s mouth is important at any age, but senior citizens should take special care as they are at especially high risk of experiencing complications with teeth and gums. We discuss some common problems that senior citizens may have with mouth care. Senior citizens should be aware of these problems, so that they can actively prevent, identify, and treat them. Caregivers should encourage healthy behaviors and assist the senior if they need medical or dental attention.

The secret to the perfect white teeth is regular care of them with a good toothbrush (need not be expensive, just good and suitable), suitable toothpaste and the correct technique to brush your teeth. Blood from the gums after a thorough brushing isn’t what we are talking about. To have perfect white bright teeth brush them, but gently; the gums are delicate. We don’t want white bright teeth with bleeding gums. Make your teeth bright and healthy too. Take care of them and they’ll serve your chewing job for years without a complaint. Instead of experimenting with our own popped up ideas consulting a dentist has better results without a doubt. To see a doctor with regular intervals can not only keep your precious teeth under care but also help keep them healthy without an extra effort.
So are you ready to start your journey towards white bright teeth?
Do:

1.    Brush your teeth twice daily.
2.    Use a good toothbrush that’s gentle to your gums.
3.    Visit a dentist once in two months and get your precious teeth an expert’s advice.
4.    Not all people have similar arrangement of teeth, so instead of copying one’s style of brushing the teeth, ask your dentist for the correct technique.
Don’t:
1.    Force your toothbrush on your teeth.
2.    Prick your teeth with sharp pins for cleaning them.
3.    Try every other brand of toothpaste or toothbrush available in the market. That won’t help.

Treatments

A pediatric dentist specializes in child psychology and hence, habit counseling is treated as one of the major areas of dental care. Habits like thumb sucking and using pacifier can have a direct effect on dental health. The Brandon Fl dentists put those who have already suffered damages because of such habits under teeth straightening and orthodontics (correcting an improper bite) treatments. The dentist can also repair tooth cavities and other defects in children of more advanced stages complaining of toothaches and pains. Any pediatric dentist belonging to a Brandon dental clinic would provide special attention towards oral conditions resulting from chronic diseases like diabetes, asthma, hay fever, cardiac defects and hyperactivity disorder.

The most common dental treatments are those dedicated to prevention: forms of hygiene and minor repair and maintenance intended to keep you from needing more extensive work done. Cleaning, scaling, filling, and resin bonding all come under the heading of preventive care — as do certain forms of oral surgery, such as the surgery for receding gums, intended to help you retain your teeth in full health, or the removal of ingrown wisdom teeth which can have a negative effect on the jaw and on surrounding teeth. These forms of dental treatment, in aiming at the prevention of worse problems, are among the most cost effective and beneficial treatments you can provide for yourself.
